This past Saturday, September 24, 2022, the Spirit of Woodlan Band and Color Guard members gathered in the morning for practice and to work the annual mattress fundraiser. The students had a great time together dressing up as mattresses, advertising for the sale, and doing what they do best, playing music together. They had fun playing songs, including the show music, parade song, school song, and even the theme from VeggieTales! It seems these kids always find a way to have fun together!
After volunteering their time at the mattress fundraiser, they gathered on the practice field to rehearse. They enjoyed a breakfast-for-lunch meal together, which included breakfast casseroles, bacon, fruit, cinnamon rolls, and muffins. They continued their practice until it was time to load the bus (yes, only one for the rest of the season) and head to Carroll High School.
After arriving at Carroll High School, the students played their favorite game, Ninja, and snacked on Uncrustables, yogurt, muffins, cookies, fruits, and veggies. The Spirit of Woodlan Marching Band and Color Guard participated in Carroll High School‘s second annual Challenge of Bands. This was the first time at the competition for the Spirit of Woodlan. In class D, they competed against Adam Central Squadron of Sound and Whitko Marching Pride. This week, the band performed more of their show than previous weeks, including a section of part three. They did a great job, and were pleased with their performance. Because there was a long delay before awards, the decision was made to return back to the school early and not wait for the award ceremony. The drum majors and color guard representatives stayed at the competition to await the awards.
At the award ceremony, the Spirit of Woodlan received the caption award for Best General Effect as well as a second-place finish. Whitko Marching Pride took first place, as well as the caption awards for Best Music and Best Visual. Adams Central Squadron of Sound came in third place. While this was not the outcome that anyone wished for, the students know that they have room to grow and improve, and have every confidence that they will put on an amazing show in the weeks ahead.
This upcoming Saturday, October 1, 2022, the Spirit of Woodlan will compete at Homestead High School for the first of two consecutive weeks. This week, they will participate in Homestead’s Fall Festival of Bands Invitational. In Class D, they will once again compete against Whitko Marching Pride, who performs at 1:45pm. The Spirit of Woodlan will perform at 2:00pm. The awards ceremony will be held at 4:45pm. Please come out to support these kids, they are all working so hard to give the judges and crowd an amazing show! Hope to see you there!
